Winter Sports Successes in 2017-18

At the end of the Winter sports season Withington celebrated a string of outstanding sporting successes as the U14 and U15 Netball and Senior Hockey teams clinched three prestigious championships.

At the Independent Schools Netball Cup Final held in Redbridge, Essex, on 9th March, our Under 15 Netball team prevailed in an all-Manchester Final vs St Bede’s to win the title. After progressing through numerous rounds of a competition involving 70 schools nationwide, Withington won 37-26 in a hard-fought final. Trophies were presented by England Netball International, Sasha Corbin and Malawian International, Mary Waya.

The following day, the Senior Hockey team emerged victorious in the Greater Manchester County Hockey Tournament. They were unbeaten in all matches vs some very strong hockey schools. Mrs Hetherington said: “The girls were awesome and for Year 13s Lexi, Gabby and Claudia, a fantastic way to finish their School Hockey careers!”

Earlier in the term, the U14 Netball team, having already become County Champions in the Autumn Term, battled all day in cold and wet conditions to become North West Regional Champions. After winning three out of four matches in the group stage, they went on to win the semi-final v Saddleworth, 12-4, and the Final v The Grange, 10-9, to become National Schools North West Champions! This then gave them the right to progress to the Finals, a large-scale competition involving two schools from every region in England. The ‘Beast from the East, Part 2’ did not daunt all the schools’ netballers who played multiple matches in freezing conditions. The WGS team’s adventures came to an end at the group stage, where they finished a very creditable sixth out of the nine schools in their group, one of the toughest, in that it included the eventual champions and runners-up.

We are also delighted to report that our Year 9 and 10 Netball teams each became South Manchester League Champions – gaining a higher number of points than any of the seven other schools taking part - and, Year 11 and the Seniors were runners-up. It should be
noted that our Greater Manchester school teams are of a very high standard, illustrated by the all-Manchester ISNC final at U15 and, at U13, Stockport Grammar were also winning finalists, making it three Manchester finalists out of six. Coming out top in the Manchester
Leagues therefore reflects an excellent record against strong competition.

The Juniors have also had an excellent term which they topped off with a fantastic third out of 16 schools at the AJIS U10 Netball tournament after winning all matches in their group, only bowing out to the eventual winners in the semi-final.
